YOUTH PROGRAMS

Youth Programs: Youth of the Year
& Scholarship Opportunities

Participation in the Youth of the Quarter and Year selection process can benefit higher education in the following programs:

Southwest Texas Regional Youth of the Year &Air Force Youth of the Year

Both of these awards follow the criteria set by the Boys & Girls Club of America. It is based on leadership qualities and service exhibited through home and family, moral character, school, service to club, life goals, obstacles overcome, essays, poise and public speaking. Youth compete at center level then proceed to state level and if selected for the state, they go on to regional then to national. Regional level winners can receive a $5,000 scholarship while the national winner can receive an additional $10,000. The Base winner competes at the command level, after being selected for a base. From there they go on to Air Force level and each base selectee travels to Washington D.C. for a special ceremony. Scholarships from the Air Force can be awarded at the command and AF levels and each Command has an Air Force winner.

Congressional Award

A challenging program that offers young people the opportunity to set personal goals and the means to achieve them. Goal setting revolves around volunteerism for public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition or exploration. Minimum age to earn an award is 14 and all goals must be accomplished by their 24th birthday. Youth are encouraged to complete this goal oriented program through six levels of achievement. Each level (bronze, silver, gold certificates and bronze, silver, gold medals) is expressed in a point system that is cumulated, meaning as a level is finished, the points carry over to the next level. We are proud to offer this life-enriching program.

Air Force Teen Aviation Camp / Space Camp

Aimed toward students who will be sophomores or juniors in high school and are interested in attending the Air Force Academy or making the Air Force a career. Youth submit an application to the Youth Center who forwards it to the Air Force Services Agency. The Aviation Camp is a joint program with the United States Air Force Academy and Air Force Services. The camp gives the youth insight on what life at the academy could be like. It is offered usually during June.
